Machiya houses are traditional wooden townhouses. Characteristics of a Machiya is narrow front side of the house going long way back to the rear areas of the home.
Due to the shape of the land, a Machiya is often nicknamed as “Unagi no Nedoko (eel’s bedroom). Materials used are also something to look at, such as clay walls, and sliding doors covered with washi (Japanese paper.)
