Cooking Lesson by Setsuko Sugimoto
- Kyoto traditional cuisine, "OBANZAI" and special meals for New Year at Sugimoto's House.
What is Obanzai ?
Obanzai is the traditional home cooking cuisine that has been passed down through generations
of ordinary Kyoto locals. It is said that Obanzai is not the gorgeous food for the special guests
but Kyoto local people prepare their ordinary food through the seasons
choosing seasonal ingredients such as Kyoto vegetables and soybean’s products.
“Shimai no Ryori” means ecological and economical food preparations
which is the key of Obanzai without buying any expensive rich-calorie ingredients
but simply they enjoy the food which are around with traditional seasonings in the way
of using wisdom of their ancestors.
The humble actions and the respect for the food help the Kyoto people to preserve
their old tradition and custom for being healthy.
This is the 4-time cooking course through autumn which will be taught
by famous Obanzai specialist, Ms. Setsuko Sugimoto at three different traditional Kyoto town houses
called Machiya such as Chion-sha whose owner is the 17th generation of family Nishimura,
