Enjoy making Japanese paper umbrella! (Miniaturized)

Town people using Japanese paper umbrellas are often depicted in Ukiyoe wood block prints in the Edo period. WAKJAPAN’s new program lets visitors enjoy calligraphy and making Japanese paper umbrella (miniaturized) with the help of professional craftsman. This will take about 2-3 hours. For those wishing to do quickly, we provide a round paper with colorful patterns to be pasted on umbrella frames.

13,000 yen per person based on 1 participant.
10,500 yen per person based on 2 participants and/or more.

Price includes the following:
1. Calligraphy lesson by WAK JAPAN's attendant.
2. Umbrella making lesson fee (
3. English speaking attendant both for calligrahy and umbrella making lessons.
4. Materials for making ONE umbrella (miniturized: 40-50 centimeter in diameter)
Price does NOT include the transportations between your home and the umbrella shop

Procedure

  1. Please specify your preferred date & time at the time of your booking. WAKJAPAN will issue a CONFIRMATION with the map to the umbrella shop.
  2. When you come to the umbrella shop, you will first receive a casual calligraphy lesson from WAKJAPAN attendant. The attendant will help you learn how to write Chinese Characters with India ink and a brush.
  3. Then you can proceed to the umbrella making room. There you write your favorite Chinese characters on a round paper which is to be pasted on umbrella frames to become your own original umbrella. This will take 2 to 3 hours.
  4. If you do not have enough time, you can choose from a variety of round paper with colorful patterns, and past it on to you umbrella frames. (Please note that the umbrella is a miniaturized one and is not suitable for actual use.)
  5. Then you can leave the umbrella shop with your own original umbrella!
